Pravda: Russia Still Winning Cold War

August 5, 2009 at 2:23 pm

Two countries, two cultures and two very different headlines for the same incident.

Pravda give us the marvellous: “Two Russian Nuclear Submarines Make USA Shake With Fear”

whilst the usually confrontational Fox News are significantly more boring with: “Defense Officials: Russian Subs Patrolling off East Coast of United States”

Firstly from Pravda, we learn:

“Two Russian nuclear submarines have been patrolling the USA’s East Coast during the recent several days, The New York Times wrote. One of the submarines was detected Tuesday about 200 miles off the US coast, anonymous sources at the Pentagon said.

The whereabouts of the other submarine are not known. The sub was reportedly traveling towards Cuba, whereas other pieces of information say that it was heading north.

Russian submarines have never approached US coasts so close since the end of the Cold War. The above-mentioned submarines are the subs of 971 Project (Akula).

Pentagon officials said that they were not concerned about the appearance of the Russian submarines in the Pacific Ocean. The submarines are traveling in international waters, and Russia has a right to hold naval drills in different parts of the world, they said.

Experts say that US nuclear submarines conduct a lot more of similar missions than Russian, French, British and Chinese submarines altogether, RBC news agency reports”

So its fine because we do it more than them, apparently. Pravda then go on to describe the submarines’ tech specs in a way calculated not to make them sound like rattling outdated rusty cigar-shaped coffins but failing miserably.

Fox News, though, doesn’t appear to be “shaking with fear”. They note merely that:

“The statement issued by Northern Command and the North American Aerospace Defense Command said, “We have been monitoring them during transit and recognize the right of all nations to exercise freedom of navigation in international waters according to international law.”

World War III seems to have been avoided, our intelligence and technology seems good enough to have noticed the Russkies sniffing around, and, as far as news channels are concerned ya still ays ya money and ya takes ya choice.
