Top marks to the Canadian government for re-instating the “Royal” prefix to their Navy & Air force. St C has had the pleasure of serving in action alongside our Canuck brethren in Bosnia & Afghanistan, and holds them in the highest esteem. They rank close to the top of the last of the martial races.
They have some wonderfully named Regiments & Units and (sad spotter that he is) St C often takes delight in reading the Canadian Order of Battle for Normandy just to immerse himself in the history that the names evoke.
Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry
Royal 22e Régiment (with the great moto (Je Me Souviens)
5e Régiment d’artillerie légère du Canada
1st Regiment Royal Canadian Horse Artillery
Being just 4 of those that I was lucky enough to serve with.
Possibly my favourite two names are
Le Regément de Maisonneuve and Lord Strathcona’s Horse. How sad that we in the UK have ruined our own regimental names, leaving ourselves with the sanitized “The Rifles” and “The Mercian Regiment”.
BZ Canada, BZ
Now if they would rid themselves of the damned French! >:o

Am I correct in believing that “Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry” is somewhat akin to the SAS ?

I recall when they adopted awful bottle green uniform & light green shirt for all Arms of Service .. and I remember thinking how much they resembled the bus crews in my home town .. Who, at that time wore identically coloured uniforms ..
@ Christopher .. If only the world could rid itself of the damned French .. 😉

The way things are going, they’ll be selling the names to sponsors. It will be the Tesco Logistical Corps and the uniforms will be polyester Hawaiian shirts. They’ll have plenty of box vans but deployment orders will be by strange circuitous routes requiring many top-security drop-offs.

You mean like the highly secretive 22 Special Mess Tin Repair Squadron ? … 😉

Nothing like doing a bit of indiscriminate killing. Then dressing up in a pretty uniform. Strutting around and calling yourself something or othther with a “Royal” in front of it.

Also, it’s high time Diageo showed its appreciation for the armed forces, seeing as how the fighting man has been a loyal customer of the company’s for years. They could pay for dozens of brand-profile regiments.
I can see there being joshing about the ceremonial cardigan and marching slippers of the Bailey’s Creamers but I bet they’ll be popular with the ladies.

Eeee our George …. there’s nowt indiscriminate about it lad ..
It’s highly organised, I’ll have you know ..
Johnny foreigner ought to be damned well grateful that those privileged enough to bear the prefix “Royal” as part of their name should be so generous, egrerious & considerate as to bother killin’ ’em at all .. 😉
