Cigarette Taxes Up In Gib – Riots?
Today the Gibraltar Parliament is given the Estimates of Revenue and Expenditure for 2010/2011…which won’t be exciting and we won’t be live-blogging it here. However, preempting these announcements, Chief Minister Peter Caruana yesterday caught everybody on the hop with an immediate change in import duty. Petrol up 4p a litre and diesel by 8p, but that’s not the killer.
It’s a massive extra 7p on a packet of cigarettes.
That means that 20 B&H cost £1.60 a packet here now. You overtaxing greedy bastards.
It’s all very well for you but some of us puffers actually have to pay these exorbitant prices. The result is that my disposable income will be less, I will spend less and the recession will therefore worsen. Only a Gibraltar equivalent of Gordon Brown (of which there is none in sight) can save us from this fate. Happily, he is still there in the UK and so you will agree with me in urging all in the UK to vote Labour. I presume you will not be so bigoted as not to allow this comment to appear.

It is indeed a fact that the revenue from your personal puffing does play a significant role in the local economy. However, every minute that a lawyer spends away from his desk is a valuable contribution to the greater good, so in your case the puffing must be encouraged by all who hold liberty dear.

Gosh, it has appeared. A delight to see that the right – er, sorry, privilege – of free speech exists even in your world. Sorry about this, just poking fun as you appreciate.

You are skirting the boundaries of the Comments policy (as defined at the foot of the page) butremain in play so far.

Ah, Had not seen policy at foot of page before now. Quite right. We don’t want any bigots ruining (or running) things. And I am still at my desk ….

At your desk? Working for the Government? In Gib? After 6pm? Eh? Is everything all right?
This may be more serious than I thought…you could be ill.
