although not convicted of equivalent crimes both released on compassionate grounds and I am sure that there have been other murderers released in England on compassionate grounds as there have been in Scotland , in fact by a previous Liberal Justice Minister in a LIB-Lab joint administration.
There are many factors which come into play for compassionate release, although to the best of my knowledge finding oil near their home country is a new one. No remorse for killing 270 people and a good chance that a triumphal homecoming followed by hero status and a state funeral will inspire others to try bombing as a political tool – good reasons to die in prison.
Why keep Himmler in Spandau until his death? It wasn’t as though he was going to reoffend, was it? “Hurrah, I’m free, let’s go and find another smelly unemployed Austrian and try that genocide thing again”. No, he was kept inside to justify the Soviet sector of Berlin and to stop him becoming a rallying point, a focus of discontent like Megrahi. Different scenario, different outcome.
Biggs was an unpleasant man who hit someone over the head and may or may not have contributed to the later death. There is no comparison. He is hardly going to inspire another wave of copy-cat train robberies and was only locked up when he got back because the authorities get narky when you raise the finger to them from a foreign country.
Each release is judged on its merits, be they inspired by justice or politics, which is why they are decided at such a high level. In this case the decision was taken by someone who’d struggle to make Mayor of a small town which is why its turning into a shambles.
What about Ronnie Biggs and terminal cancer?
